I've been a Pittsburgh Steelers fan since 1987. I was in the 4th grade and the teacher, I suppose teaching U.S. Geography and maybe current events, had everyone in the class pick an NFL team. Well, my last name starts with V, so I got what was left. All the popular teams were gone. The Steelers were far away the 4 Super Bowl wins from the 70s and not really good at that time. So I picked them, mainly to stay within the state. I knew nothing about football, my dad didn't really watch until the playoffs, all I remember before 1987 about football were some Super Bowls.
Lucky for me the Steelers were in the AFC and happened to be on NBC just about every week. Well, I got hooked on them. I have been watching just about every Sunday they are on since then. I'll skip family events just because the Steelers are on, look they're on 16 times a year you can see me some other time. I love the Steelers, one day they'll probably give me a heart attack.
Now on to my point, the starting quarterbacks for the Steelers go like this since I have been a fan. Mark Malone, Bubby Brister, Neil O'Donnell, Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Jim Miller, Kent Graham, Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox, and Ben Roethlisberger.
Wow. See what I have gone through, it was not until Ben got to the Steelers that they finally got a franchise QB. Neil O'Donnell fit into the system nicely, but he threw 2 picks to the Cowgirls in Super Bowl 30 and then decided to go to the Jets for lots of money so F him. The Steelers had some really good teams throughout the years I have been following them. I'm spoiled as a Steelers fan, even before Ben got there. Seeing your team make the playoffs just about every year is not something that other fan bases can say about their team.
Ben just has that extra something as a player, he's a special player. I think most people saw that his rookie year, the guy had it. This was a nice fit to the Steelers team, they needed a QB to get them over the hump. No way was Cowher winning a Super Bowl without a QB like Ben. A guy that could takeover the game. Ben was it.
Now, yesterday I heard the rumors about the Steelers listening to trade offers from other teams. Yeah say what you want that it's not true, but so many times I've heard NFL rumors that people deny and deny and deny, yet 3 days later it was actually true.
THIS WOULD BE THE DUMBEST THING THE STEELERS COULD DO.
Does Ben have a problem, I don't know, he's a male and likes to get laid. Not like he's married. Does he need to go out to clubs to get himself in this situation, no he needs to stay the hell out of the clubs from now on. Has he been criminally convicted of anything, no. So why would you dump him. Because he's not up with the conduct code? He doesn't fit the Steelers Player mold of being a stand up guy to the community? Because he's arrogant and not friendly to every single person he meets? Oh, he might be getting a few game suspension, oh no. It'll be early in the season, not like the commissioner picks what games he can't play.
I know it's rumors.
But if the Steelers do this to a QB that is entering some of his best playing years after years of crappy QBs....
It would really question if I want to continue to be a fan of the Steelers and football in general. That really crossed my mind. The Steelerss are poised to be Super Bowl favorites for the next few years. Taking Ben out of the equation won't make anything better.
