Let's get this out of the way first, I suggest referring back to this every now and again.
Stereotypes exist because people fit those stereotypes.I had originally started thinking about doing this post a long time ago. How times have we seen athletes who go through messy divorces, or just do asinine things for absolutely no reason. So the wheels were turning in my mind before the Tiger scandal? and the Ben Roethlisberger accusations.
I mean I've come to expect this behavior from athletes. Plain and simple, they are jocks. Go back and look at the stereotype for jocks. Go watch the movies. Remember your high school days. Most were probably arrogant assholes, who did not care about you and would steal your girlfriend if she was hot enough. They got whatever they wanted, and probably got away with a lot more, especially if they were good. Now funnel that down to the professional level. Now you have a whole mess of people with this mentality, except it is worse, because they've been fed this their whole life. Not just a few years.
I am not saying every athlete is like this and goes out and does these things, but thinking that all the athletes are arrogant pricks means that when you meet one that is not a prick you will be left with a great experience and not a bad taste in your mouth. Or when they do something stupid you will shrug it off. Plus professional athletes are adults, for the most part I know in some sports they have allowed some under the age of 18 to play, so they need to take responsibility on their own, and live with their actions and suffer those consequences.
So I am not giving them a pass.
What I am really getting at is that these people are not role models and this behavior is nothing new. So I'm not sure why people always seemed so surprised when stuff like this happens.
Regarding Ben's incident, I have read some comments and sports writers questioning why Ben was out at a college bar when he's 28. Well, he's a single young guy, where else is he going to go? I didn't know there was a bar that was only for certain people. I always thought bars were places you go to have fun, and if you're single a bar is to go find some other singles and well get together for the night. As far as I'm concerned most sports writers are failed athletes who could never get past that collegiate level (even if they made it there), and some of their hatred and jealousy is coming out against these athletes. You know since they weren't good enough for the next level, and did not have that option to go out to a bar and have swarms of people know who they are or have the money to do that. (Note: I have no idea what went on that night, and at the time of writing this post nothing really new has come to light, but know this sexual assault is not something that should be taken lightly. I'm just generalizing)
Just my thoughts, I don't hold Athletes/Musicians/Actors/Politicians to a higher level. I expect them to fail and make bad decisions from time to time.
