Dazed and Confused Part 1
This part 1, because this will be an ongoing rambling of sorts by me.
It all started this past Saturday evening (3/24/07) at a friends St. Patty's day party. When chatting it up with some friends, one of which is a HUGE Howard Stern fan, mentioned they had a guy on the show who wrote this book: Sounds like Teen Spirit, a book about stolen riffs and what not, and one of those songs was Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Saying that the opening riff was "stolen" from a 60's band called Spirit, the song Taurus. Well I found a clip of the song and doesn't it just sound similar, but not the same. Besides the intro sounds similar it's not the whole song, note for note, word for word. Plus this was a 60's psychedelic band, guess what. If you've heard one 60's psychedelic band, you've heard them all. They all have the same sound, same vocal styling, same trippy guitar and I bet they never credited each other. Listen to them, they sound the same, but they are different and remember the guitar has a finite range of sounds it can make, so things are going to sound similar, especially when something inspires you. Same with words, you can only say something so many times!
Well, this led me to look into a little more, because for some reason I like to listen to the inspiration behind my favorite songs, then curse myself for doing so, because they normally are horrible. So I checked the world wide web for more information, and doing so, I found some Zeppelin bashing authors out for blood: See Here. It's a good article, but I really think the author is just out to get Jimmy Page for some reason. Because basically it's most of Zeppelin's early work, which for most bands, that's when you play other peoples material and kindof conform to their style until you form your own, which Zeppelin did. One thing that brought back to my attention was Dazed and Confused, I had always known it was from the Yardbirds, and the Yardbirds had inspiration from someone else, but I had never heard the original until yesterday.
Jake Holmes MySpace page, go here and click on Dazed and Confused. Listen to it. Now go watch this: the Yardbirds: I'm Confused Live (hopefully it's still there), now go listen to Led Zeppelin's version, it's not on the web sorry.
They all sound similar, wow imagine that! The Yardbirds, pretty much keep the same lyrics, although the foundation for Zep's version is there, with Jimmy Page changing the guitar part and keeping the walking bass intro (important a little later) that is used in Holme's version.
So I listened and I listened to the Zep version and Holmes's version for the past day, really keeping it in my head for the past 24 hours. And it came to me today, well yes they sound very similar, they're not the same, new guitar part, new lyrics and how they're sung are different as well. The Holmes version drops the walking bass line and they bass changes throughout the song. Does Holmes deserve a credit for the songwriting, no. If you gave credit to everyone who inspired you in writing that song the list would be huge I'm sure. Plus I really do not think it's Holmes's same song, they're different, but sound similar. You could say that for just about every punk song written, every hair metal ballad song, every reggae song. Inspiration comes from something and I think Holmes inspired the Yardbirds to do a similar song, which Jimmy made into his own.
Oh and the walking bass line, is an old jazz thingy, I wish I could find a good example for you, but I'm not versed in the ways of Jazz and do not know enough about. So my question is to Mr. Jake Holmes and where did you steal that song from? Considering the fact that Folk Artists stole from each other all the time, along with Blues artists.

Trojan Condom Commercial
So keeping up with my anti-sharing earphones campaign, Trojan Condoms has a commercial talking about safe sex and protect yourself from disease and knocking chicks up and what not. But the couple in the commercial go on to share earphones! That's just wrong! Seriously, who and the hell wants to put a greasy, waxy earphone from someone else's ear?? Do you, if so I guess you're a freak and probably like to wear animal suits and have sex. It's bad enough that you yourself can spread your own germs back to yourself by wearing earphones, do you want someone else's to? Don't hit it without a condom, but you can listen to my music from my nasty ass earphone. Someone has to stop these commercials, it's bad for public health.

Verizon Wireless Commercials
Verizon has been showing commercials showing off their MP3 phones, while promoting "hot new tunes". Well they're disgusting. The most recent one shows a guy working out and is all sweaty with the headphones in his ears, then he proceeds to put the headphones on the person he's talking to which is shot in the from the vantage point of you, the viewer. That's just sending a bad message, I wouldn't put on someone else's headphones, you get sick that way!
Around flu season they tell you to wash your hands and to avoid touching your mouth/nose/ears. Because that's how you get sick. But Verizon has taken upon themselves to say screw that, listen to this awesome song and get my germs! Shame on you Verizon! Your complete disregard for public health is unforgivable. May your sales plummet.
